What is the CETC

The Corn Exchange Theatre Company is a charitable trust set up in January 2001 by a small group of enthusiasts. Their intention was to take over the lease of the Corn Exchange building and promote its future use as a centre for the performing arts in Stamford. An 80 year lease was secured and the mammoth task of re-furbishing the premises, using mainly voluntary labour, is now in progress.

Aims and Objectives

To establish and maintain a multi-functional theatre complex which is self-financing and available to the local community throughout the year. It was therefore essential to put the premises to work as quickly as possible, creating a living entity and business centre capable of raising much needed working capital. This was done by sub-letting the existing function hall to an auctioneer and installing a kitchen area for use by theatre groups during show week. The extensive cellars were also cleared prior to refurbishment.

Emphasis on Youth

Looking to the future of Stamford's theatrical and cultural life, it is planned to involve local schools, colleges and others in discussions on the most effective ways of involving young people in the Corn Exchange project. These talks will include the broad spectrum of music, dramatic art and dance. It is also hoped to encourage the disabled - not simply by providing facilities including disabled stage access - but with classes and specialist instruction which will enable them to play an active part in the life of the theatre.
